The Magnetic Island Race Week Committee and the Townsville Cruising Yacht Club, as Organising Authority, invites owners to apply for entry in the inaugural Magnetic Island Race Week, on the waters of Cleveland Bay from 1st to 4th September 2006. The Notice of Race and entry forms are online now.

Australia’s richest Sailing Regatta will be held annually off Magnetic Island, attracting some of the country’s leading mariners and yachts to the magnificent sailing waters of Cleveland Bay. With the Magnetic Island just 140 nautical miles north of Hamilton Island, the regatta is timed to allow sailors to extend their stay on the north Queensland coast.

This event will be the richest Sailing Regatta in Australia, offering substantial prizemoney over four classes of racing. The event will be hosted and run under the auspicious of the Townsville Cruising Yacht Club and the services of one of the world’s leading race administrators, Denis Thompson of Sydney have been engaged.

Racing will include a Cleveland Bay race on Friday, two races on Saturday and the feature event – a spectacular round the Island race on Sunday.

The Magnetic Island event will be based at Nelly Bay Harbour and the world class developments taking place in the harbour and on the island generally, will create a magnificent cosmopolitan home for the annual event, attracting southern yachts, crews and attending supporters.

Race week Director Jeff Jimmieson commented this morning; 'Magnetic Island is all go for the inaugural Magnetic Island Race Week.

'The new Nelly Bay Harbour looks fantastic, the weather is beautiful and we have a time in store on and off the water. This is the unique opportunity to be part of an inaugural race week – one which we are sure will become a very popular event on the sailing calendar. Talk to some Townsville locals at Airlie or Hamilton Island events, the crews on Zoe, Sundowner, Rising Farrst, Pro Beat Passion, The Major and Mach I and Zen, will be happy to tell you about the great racing.'

Viewing of the racing will be spectacular from vantage points on the Strand and Island and a number of spectator and sponsor vessels will follow the events.

Townsville is the sunniest city on the Queensland Coast and Magnetic Island averages 320 days of sunshine per year.

Fast passenger and vehicles ferries services run frequently from Townsville to Magnetic Island and return.

A wide and varied range of accommodation is available in both Townsville and on Magnetic Island.

Flights from captial cities are readily available to Townsville, the gateway to Tropical North Queensland and this unique area of the Barrier Reef.

The entry form is now available online at www.maggieraceweek.com.au
