New Zealand on top after Day 2 of 420 Worlds

by Sail-World on 2 Aug 2006
Qualifying series leaders, Sarah Bilkey and Rosie Sargisson (NZL 52717) jostle at a congested start on the second day of racing at the 420 Worlds Event Media
Two New Zealand crews lead the championships, and New Zealand has dominated the second day of racing which was held in fresh winds of 12 to 14 knots from the North, forcing organisers to take the racing further offshore.

In the Open fleet, Carl Evans and Peter Burling won their first race of the day, and now have four wins from six races in the regatta. Simon Cooke and Scott Illingworth are performing well after repairing a nine inch hole in their boat and being granted redress by the International Jury, yesterday.

Evans and Burling finished in 11th place in the second race of the day after ripping a new spinnker in half, shortly after the first hoist when they had a very comfortable lead and they sailed the rest of the race without it. (As well they lost more time getting the remnant down from the top of the mast). They had good speed in the windier conditions today.

In the Ladies Fleet, Sarah Bilkey and Rosie Sargisson lead their event after scoring two wins in their fleet today from the three races sailed. The second NZ crew of Georgina Hill and Michelle Kennedy have had a good day and now lie in fourth place overall - an improvement of two on yesterday.

Big mover has been Shelley Hesson and Bianca Barbarich-Backer (who will go on to represent NZL in the Pre-Pre Olympics in Beijing later this month). They won two races today and finished second in the third. However they are dragging a DNF and an OCS from the first day - and even though a discard race has been allowed now that six races have been sailed, they lie in 24th overall.

On the results todate it is expected that New Zealand will have between four and six crews in each of the Gold Fleets for the Open and ladies events.

Simon Cooke (www.simoncooke.co.nz) comments on the first day's racing:

Qualifying - Day 1:

Day One, Carl and Peter and Simon and Scott won their opening races by most of the last reach!! The rest of the team did well also, unfortunately Mike and Josh broke their internal forestay and missed two races.

Shelley and Bianca started off not so well with an OCS, but I am confident if they put a good day in tomorrow they should make it through to gold fleet. Sarah and Rosie had a fantastic day recording a 5, 4 and 2 putting them in 2nd place overall in the Women. Georgina and Michelle are lying in 6th after a solid day. Susannah and Danielle are in 21st place (a great effort). The Berry's and Stephanie and Cindy are right on the cut.

Leah and Nicola are further back. In the Open fleet Carl and Peter have a perfect score card, taking 3 bullets! Simon and Scott are third overall after spending the night in the protest room after being hit very badly by a Spanish team whilst they were on starboard on the way up the first beat of the second race. So unfortunately they have been granted a disappointing 5th place average for race 2 and 3.

They have some boat builders working around the clock to get the boat back out on the water in similar or with little loss of performance as they appeared to be flying around the track just like Carl an Peter! The collision was extremely bad and they will be lucky if they can get out for the first races tomorrow. We have some good boat builders on the job and we are hoping that the boat will be okay tomorrow morning.

So they have a 1, RDG (5) and RDG (5). Next is Mike and Riley in 12th, which they should be able to improve on. Bruce and Jason a further back but are carrying a 38th when the capasized so they will move up dramatically once they drop this as the had a solid 3rd and another reasonable race. Next is Rowan and Ben in around 30th place.

The Young Ones placed in the 20's and are just outside the cut so they will have to put in at least two top 20's tomorrow in order to make gold. Mike and Josh will ahve to have a great day tomorrow (which we know they can) and then they will just make it through into gold. So it was a great day for NZ 420 Sailing and puts NZ in excellent position to have a crack at some world titles and the team trophy this year.

Full results follow from the Open and Ladies Worlds fleets at the Worlds 420 Championships in Gran Canaria. These are provisional and are as they appear on the club site.
