Antigua Sailing Week Swan Caribbean Challenge Trophy won by Chippewa
by Mark Bullingham on 31 May 2001
Swan 68, Chippewa, owned and skippered by Clayton Deutsch has been awarded with the Swan Caribbean Challenge Trophy after a close fought contest with Swan 56, Lolita owned by Frank Savage. After checking the Swan Challenge rules carefully, Chippewa was declared the highest placed Swan at the 34th Antigua Race Week, which took place earlier this month.
Once again the fleet of 24 Swan yachts participating in the regatta excelled
against strong competition with Chippewa taking second place in the Racer
Cruiser Class 1 and second overall in the Racer Cruiser Fleet; Lolita taking
first place in the Racing Class 11 and third overall in the Racing Fleet
behind the 79' Morning Glory and 78' Sagamore and Swan 55 Pamir taking first
place in the Cruising Class 1 and second overall in the Cruising Fleet and
Swan 57 S&S the overall winner in the Racer Cruiser Non Spinnaker Fleet.
The stunning Asprey & Garrard Caribbean Challenge Trophy, being awarded for
a second time at the Antigua Race Week, was presented to Clayton Deutsch and
his crew at the ClubSwan Cocktail and Prizegiving Party held exclusively for
Swan Owners and their guests at the Copper & Lumber Store at the end of the
regatta.
Deutsch was clearly delighted about adding this trophy to his collection,
having won the Transatlantic Challenge during the ARC Race last November
saying: 'I'm very happy with how we've done, Antigua has been a ball and the
racing has been great. We're still learning how to sail the boat fast and
every time we get a little better.'
His next target is the Swan American Regatta to be held in Newport, Rhode
Island from July 7th - 13th.
