The Italian Luna Rossa Challenge stunned America’s BMW ORACLE Racing with a come-from-behind win on the final run to the finish. Chris Dickson’s BMW ORACLE team had done a great job of building a 27-second lead at the final top mark, but Luna Rossa found a favourable shift on the left side of the run, overhauling the Americans for an exciting turn-around.

Emirates Team New Zealand took early control of the match against Shosholoza but the Kiwis just could not shake off the South Africans. By the leeward mark, RSA 83 was only 19 seconds off NZL 84’s lead. The underdogs continued to push the Kiwis, but Dean Barker hung on for a 30-second win.

The result sees Luna Rossa join Alinghi on eight points, one behind Emirates Team New Zealand and its perfect 9 - 0 record.  Next Emirates Team New Zealand races Alinghi but these following matches have been delayed! Check out www.americascup.com

Squadron Tea Dance
Music will be provided by the NZ Navy Band.  The full band will play "swing and blues" from 4pm - 6pm and then a 10-piece "rock/popular" group will continue until 8.30pm.

While the band changes over, a light supper buffet will be served.  Dress: smart casual.

We are able to visit the Yard of Robertson Boatbuilders in Warkworth. There are two new vessels being constructed in Wood at Conrad Robertson’s Yard plus a fibreglass launch from a mould taken from a 1928 tug.

Close by is the restoration of the JANE GIFFORD, the Scow that so many of us grew up with on the Hauraki Gulf.
Also moored on the river at the yard is the Vintage Steam Launch Kapanui.
We hope to be able to take a trip on the river, weather permitting and we will also have a commentary on the Jane Gifford.

2007 Round North Island Race Planning Well Underway
In 2004 the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron hosted the inaugural Round North Island Fully Crewed Race. This race was offered both as a stepping stone for boats planning on racing offshore, and as a significant race in its own right. It attracted entries from professionally crewed TP52s right through to smaller cruiser racers. Skippers and crews continue to speak highly of the challenges and enjoyment experienced during the race.

This race is being held again in 2007 in a similar format to the first race. The race starts on Saturday 3 February 2007 from the RNZYS tower in Auckland Harbour. Leg 2 will start on Monday 12 February from the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club in Wellington.

Competitors are also invited to participate in the RPNYC Line 7 regatta during the weekend of 9-11 February.
A Notice of Race is being prepared and will be available shortly along with an Entry Form.
IRC, ORC and PHRF divisions will be offered, enabling a wide range of boat configurations to be catered for. The race will be Category 2 safety.

The RNZYS see this race as offering a variety of challenges to any yacht and crew and look forward to hosting a large fleet in February.

Improve your knowledge
COASTGUARD Marine Medic Course
Hosted by Yachtlife line Ltd.
This weekend course trains commercial/pleasure craft users in the applied first response and medical procedures. This is a hands-on course which teaches candidates the ability to sustain and treat a casualty for up to 18-24 hours with very little medical equipment.

Both the Coastal & Offshore Medic courses are MSA certified, meet with the requirement of MCA and the Coastal is NZQA accredited. Combined, the Coastal and Offshore certificates with a further short correspondence course are the equivalent of the STCW95 certified First Aid at Sea Course, for the purpose of attending the higher level STCW95 certified Ship Masters Medical Course that is required for commercial skippers.

Carl Williams and Hamish Pepper Star Campagne Update
7th overall in Kiel week Germany. 50 boats from 20 countries.
Although this is still a good result with the level of competition it certainly feels like my regatta was a game of rugby with unconverted try’s! You know the game where you’re watching Carlos Spencer (one of the great first five eights) run, pass and kick for touch. But when it comes to kick for goal, it is just not happening for him. Well that was our regatta!

There were a number of contributing factors! One was that our lead up time was seriously under prepared. Arriving with one day to put the boat back together and rigged before the first race was not ideal. With my busy schedule racing keel boats and David Giles racing another regatta finishing the day before, this left us with no boat training time. I think this really showed in the first part of the regatta, often dropping places because I was focused on making the boat go fast and losing boat lengths with untidy boat handling. Instead of keeping my eyes out of the boat and looking for the next wind shift.

The first 2 days of racing was in strong winds of 20+ kts. It had certainly been a while since I had sailed the star in strong wind and with the lack of preparation it didn’t make it any easier. These boats are extremely sensitive to boat handling and an error can result in breaking the mast! We kept our mast intact but our boat handling was a little rusty! Still we had some great starts and first up wind legs to be in great shape at the top mark for the first rounding. Only to then have boats pass us later in the race because of little mistakes.

The 3rd day was our worst day with a 19th and an OCS (On Course side of the Starting line). But what really dug the claws in was in the restarted OCS race which we won comfortably…… But then on shore realised that we had been OCS, as we hadn’t seen our number on the board. For restarted races the boats that were recorded as OCS get displayed on a board and can not sail the next race. We were in fact lucky to not get a DND (do not drop) on our score sheet which would have ruined our regatta completely. The mistake had been partly us and partly the race committee. All the OCS boats were not displayed at the same time so when we looked and didn’t see our number we started to prepare for the next start, therefore missing it altogether. The good news was that we were not DNDed and were starting to sail the boat properly.

Day 4 was an ok to good day with a 2nd and 5th. Still a few mistakes were made but that’s all part of learning this new class. Again leading both races at one point but couldn’t convert into points (or less points in yachting).

Day 5 and medal race. We entered the medal race in 7th place, some distance behind 6th place and very close to 8th and 9th. With the double points system it makes it interesting. These races are designed for a total race time of 15- 20 mins, so extremely quick and extremely stressful if it all comes down to this race. Which it did for the top 5 boats with 6th an outside chance.

We had a great race and lead around all marks to win. While just hoping that all the other boats would fall into place so we could move up the leader board. Unfortunately this didn’t happen. The real race was behind us with overall leaders doing penalty turns and back in the pack it was anyone’s guess who won the regatta. As it turned out Mark Mendleblat an old Laser buddy won coming from 4th overall. Robert Scheidt the regatta leader dropped to 2nd with Mateusz Kusznierewicz from Poland (Gold & Silver medalist) jumping from 6th to 3rd overall.

All in all it was another good regatta with lots of lessons learnt and if I use captain hindsight to put that OCS as a 1st we would have finished up 3rd overall! But unfortunately we can’t and this is the game we play.

Where to from here?
Well again I have 1 day in Valencia after driving for 2 days (2300kms) with the boat on the back. I next head to Italy for a Mumm 30 keel boat regatta, then on leaving Italy fly to Portugal. It’s Cascais Sailing Week for some star sailing. The good news is Carl (Tiny) has managed to get some time off from his Americas Cup Campaign with BMW Oracle. This will be our first time back in the Star together since January and the first time since buying our own boat. Although again we are making the same mistake that I have just made in Kiel, (lack of preparation time). It has been short notice with only just realising we could do the regatta 2 weeks ago. Cascais is the site for next years ISAF World championships. The ISAF Worlds is the first chance to qualify the country in the 2008 Olympics. Therefore this is a great opportunity for Carl and I to sail together before the Europeans and to learn the sailing area.
