The International Rowing Federation (FISA) held a meeting of European national federations in Munich to decide on a possible re-introduction of the European Rowing Championships.
European national federations voted 24 in favour and 4 against to reintroduce the European Championships with a first edition at the end of September 2007.
The second issue discussed was whether the reintroduction of this new event to the calendar would justify the creation of a European Rowing Federation which would also deal with other European specific rowing issues.
Delegates voted 21 to 6 against the creation of a new federation, and chose to entrust FISA with the responsibility of this organisation through the creation of a dedicated European Rowing management board. This board shall be composed of three European members of the FISA council and three elected representatives of the European national federations.
Bids will now be requested for 2007 and 2008 European Rowing Championships which will be attributed during an annual meeting of European Federations to take place during the World Rowing Championships in Eton, Great Britain at the end of August this year.
The European Rowing Championships have not been held since 1973 after which the event was replaced by the World Rowing Championships.
