The Ronstan 2006 Jolly Boat National Championships were held at Maraetai Beach Sailing Club last Saturday and Sunday.
Competitors came from Waiheke, around Auckland and one from Wellington.
The winds were fair despite the forecast and seven races were held.
Ronstan New Zealand were the principal sponsor of the event.
Current National Champion Roger Hall, sailing Peppermint Planet, won five of the seven races to retain the national title by a comfortable margin.
His brother Ray Hall sailing Murray Ross's old boat sailed well to finish second, with a relative new comer Matt Hall-Smith finishing third.
Steve Newcombe launched his new Jolly Boat the evening prior to the Nationals, and while did not feature in the podium places, showed more promise when the wind came up.
The Jolly Boat was designed by John Spencer, the plywood Guru of New Zealand yachting, who designed this easy to sail, low cost, performance dinghy for pleasure sailing and racing
Initially intended as weekend sailing dinghy, the Jolly Boat has developed into a fast competitive racing dinghy.
The Jolly Boat is suitable for all ages and while predominantly raced in the Auckland Region, the Jolly Boat is raced through out New Zealand.
There are two options in building a new Jolly Boat:
1. Purchase a Full size set of plans from the Jolly Boat Association. These plans are easily read and comes complete with a building guide to help you build you a true master piece
2. Purchase from the Jolly Boat association a fiberglass shell and finish it off at home. This option takes away the need for a building jig and with minimal tools you can put you own wooden decks, cockpit floor and gunwales on. The hull comes with a gel coat so there is no need for painting.
The time duration from collecting your hull to having it in the water is approximately 80 hours of work
