SARS participation key to tracking Geronimo

by Superyachting Challenges on 14 Apr 2006
SYCE (Superyachting Challenge Events) announced today that SARS (Secure Asset Reporting Services) is supplying its technology—a unique combination of onboard hardware and software—to provide up-to-the-minute real-time reporting of the pace and location of maxi trimaran, Geronimo, as she attempts her world record run from San Francisco to Yokohama, Japan.

'We are honoured that SYCE selected our Vessel Tracking Service for this exciting endeavor,' says Robert Lear, SARS Vice President. 'Fundamentally, we developed our technology to improve safety and security for those who go to sea, whether it is on fishing vessels or container ships. Hosting the voyage of the Geronimo is a really fascinating angle on our satellite tracking business and we almost feel like we are along for the ride!' he adds.

SARS is tracking the progress of Geronimo across the Pacific using position reports from a Skywave DMR200D communicator transmitting over the Inmarsat D+ network. The position reports are displayed on SARS' proprietary web application, Intelitracs®, along with vessel speed and bearing data. By employing this highly evolved marine communications technology, when communicating the yacht's position to industry, friends and crew families, SYCE is able to provide literal location information.

'When we looked at the most effective way to keep track of Geronimo's progress, without hesitation we approached the folks at SARS,' says SYCE's Rob Stirling, 'In essence, it is imperative in day-to-day operations that we use a communications technology that works in tandem with the most technically proficient yacht sailing the world's oceans today. More, we need to rely on the ability of this core communications device to help foster not only a sense of security about the boat and her crew but to be able to accurately let the folks back home know exactly where she is at all times.' Location reports on Geronimo's progress will be presented on each communiqué disseminated.
