Video of New M4 foiler in action

by Sail-World/GJN on 2 Apr 2006
M4 Prototype MKII M4 Simon Maguire
The M4 was exhibited at the Alexandra palace Dinghy Show for the first time this year.

Designed and developed by Simon Maguire, the M4 Prototype is a new and exciting sailing dinghy that developes the new form of sailing, hydro foil sailing termed ‘foiling’. This form of sailing has created a lot of interest due to the recent sucess of hydro foils in the International Moth class, and Simon intends the M4 to appeal to those whose skills and physiques are not suited to the Moth.

In this fast developing area of dinghy sailing Simon has designed an easy to sail dinghy foiler, with an emphasis on simplicity, reliability and fun. The main brief was ‘That the design could be given to a good club sailor for an afternoons foiling so more people can enjoy the thrills and spills of this new form of dinghy sailing’.

'Like experiencing the unnatural silences as you foil effortlessly, accelerating to high speeds, as the rigging starts to whistle and you don’t even have to hike out!'

Testing has been carried out at Lyme Regis and the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy. The Weymouth area seems to be the focal point for UK foiling at the moment, with the Adam May/L Jenkins foiling Moth and RS projects also based in Portland.

You can see the M4 in action here during testing sessions last summer.
