World's Ten Largest Yachts and Who Owns Them

by Sail-World Cruising on 15 Feb 2006
Al Salamah SW
When you’re wondering whether and how to upgrade either from nothing to your first yacht or from your current yacht to the next stage, spare a thought for the 10 largest yacht owners in the world.
In Power and Motoryacht’s Top Ten list just rolled out by Diane Byrne, there are two Americans, both computer whiz kids, a Turkish businessman, one Greek, two Arabs, there are two boats for charter, but the biggest prize of all goes to a Russian Billionaire, who owns, not one, but two of the Top Ten. The fact that he owns yet another yacht just slightly smaller is just rubbing salt into the wound.

And here are the Top Ten:

1. Al Salamah, owned by the Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, son of King Fahd of Sauid Arabia – it’s 456 feet long, complete with indoor swimming pool in a country style conservatory.

2. Rising Sun, at 453feet, owned by Larry Ellison, Chief of Oracle Corporation, reputedly for sale. Is it because of the $65,000,000 he spends a year on yacht expenses? – his accountant has been chiding him recently about this, according to some recent published memos. Never mind, if he sells it, he will still be able to go for an occasional sail on his other boat – the 192ft Ronin

3. Octopus, at 414 feet, is owned by Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft – he’s also a multiple yacht owner. This yacht has lots of charisma, with a submarine lounge where guests can watch the sea-life outside while enjoying a martini or two.

4. MY Savarona, 408 feet. She’s owned by a Turkish businessman, Kahraman Sadikoglu, and what a classic she is. Now over 70 years old, Kahraman Bey completely restored her to her former elegance. There’s a Turkish Hamam (bath) on board, complete with traditional marble alcoves and central slab, and the brass staircase is a central feature. If you like you can even charter her for a day, but it will cost you US$65,000 a day. www.mysavarona.com

5. Alexander, 400 feet. This is a yacht for charter, and is more like a floating hotel – there are over 50 crew to cater for the guests in 27 staterooms, but there are also kindergarten areas, business meeting rooms, and of course, a beauty salon. Sail-world has not been able to identify her owner.

6. Turama, 382 feet. Not the most stylish of boats, but available for charter, and managed by Sete Yachts.

7. Atlantis II, 379 feet. Owned by the Niarchos family of Greece, and kept in Monaco Harbour. The boat rarely, if ever, leaves the harbour.

8. Pelorus, just a wee smaller at 377 feet. Owned by Russian entrepreneur Roman Abramovich. In contrast the Atlantis II, however, the newly rich billionaire uses the boat constantly, and has recently undertaken some extensive improvements. Now, it has two heliports, instead of only one.

9. Le Grand Bleu, 370 feet. Believe it or not, this yacht is also owned by Abramovich – he must have had a VERY good business since communism was toppled in Russia. This yacht is spending its time in the Americas, and is also well used.

10. Lady Moura, at 344 feet, just scrapes into the list. Owned by Nasser al-Rashid, a Saudi Arabian figure who has spent at least part of his youth in the United States. She’s a sleek, though not new, yacht. The interior is of Italian design.
