Access Class Australian,International Championship

by Graeme Adam on 30 Jan 2006
Five states and an overseas entry shared the honours in the Access Class Australian and International Championships.

Mostly brisk conditions at Victoria Harbour, Melbourne Docklands greeted competitors on the last day of the first major regatta following the establishment and official acceptance of the Australian Access Class Association. A number of rookies put on a good showing, some joining recognised elites in achieving championship status. In the final wrap-up, championship honours went to entrants from five states and an international competitor.

As part of the event, the Victorian Access Class Championships were held. Full results of this and the National Titles will be on www.yachtingvictoria.com.au. National results below.

One of the most amazing performances came from Genevieve Broadbent of Sailability Perth, who came second in the 303 single-person division, including a first in three of her races. Genevieve, a young professional, started sailing only nine months ago, after partial recovery from a stroke.

In his closing comments, Race Manager David Staley paid compliment to the commitment of the 100-strong volunteer team of Sailability members from almost every state, Victorian yacht-clubbers and Volvo Ocean Race volunteers.

Principal Race officer Peter Cass paid tribute to the spirit of the sailors, commenting that they stood the course even during those races when the winds were non-existent or shifting when other classes would have given up.

Australian Access Class Association President (and Adelaide resident) Deidre Schahinger announced that the 2007 Access Class Australian and International Championships will be held from 6th to 9th April on St Vincent’s Gulf, South Australia and will be hosted by Adelaide Sailing Club.
