APC Logistic Trailable Multihull Nats – Day 1

Day one of the APC Logistic Trailable Multihull Nationals gave the competitors a variety of conditions, with a light race followed by a bit more action for the second race in a building breeze.

After a brief postponement to allow the wind direction to stabilise, the first of two triangle course races got underway in five to eight knots of wind. Rob Remilton was a little enthusiastic on Wilparina II with a jumped start leading to an individual recall. Raw to the Core got away to a great start at the boat end of the line and worked out to the left side of the course with Carbon Kopy sailing close on her heels. As the boats moved up the first leg, Bob and Kim Hutching (Voodoo Spirit) and Keith Glover (Trilogy) were fighting it out near the lead on the left, with Trilogy being forced to tack as Raw to the Core came across on starboard to join the tussle. Raw to the Core tacked away and was looking good half way up the first leg as she crossed Carbon Kopy, who had gone right, but was now headed out to the left with Trilogy and Voodoo Spirit. As the boats approached the top mark it became evident that the left side of the course paid off and Daryl Dorsett was setting the pace on Carbon Kopy, the highest rating boat in the fleet and renown for her light air speed; she was followed by the two seasoned trimarans, Voodoo Spirit and Trilogy, then by Tony Considine’s new all carbon Raider and Martyn Riley’s Bloomfield 30, Raw to the Core, who had gone out to the right.

Carbon Kopy revelled in the light conditions and gradually opened up her lead to take line honours; the experienced crew from Hervey Bay flying the hull for much of the upwind legs. Voodoo Spirit was kept honest by seasoned campaigner Keith Glover with his all star crew, including world renowned skiff sailor Julian Bethwaite, highly successful multihull campaigner Jamie Morris and sailmaker Ben Kelly, but the team from Sydney (Voodoo Spirit) held on to take second over the line followed by Trilogy. The two Victorian debutants APC Max and Raw to the Core battled it out downwind, with Raw to the Core gaining the upper hand soon after the wing mark, sailing a mixed race to cross the line in fourth. Seasoned campaigner Joel Berg and co. on Allyacht Spars were sailing an excellent race on the original Raider and later threatened the much lighter all carbon version APC Max, but were held off as the breeze freshened slightly. Rob Remilton on his tricked up Farrier F9-R Wilparina II didn’t recover from his mistake at the start and sailed a lonely race into seventh over the line.

Race two started soon after the final boats had completed the first race, in a building twelve to fifteen knots of breeze. Raw to the Core was caught out too far away from the line and had to fall in behind the tail end of the fleet. Trilogy and Voodoo Spirit set the pace up the first leg heading out to the left side of the course again, with Carbon Kopy tacking early after the start, closely followed by Martyn Riley’s Bloomfield 30 (http://www.cat-plans.com/SY001.html) Raw to the Core, with both catamarans sitting up on one hull for most of the leg. As the boats approached the top mark Trilogy was in control with Raw to the Core having made up good ground and rounding the mark in second position, just ahead of Voodoo Spirit, then Carbon Kopy, APC Max and Allyacht Spars.

Coming out of the mark the crew of Voodoo Spirit demonstrated the advantage several seasons campaigning can have by slipping up the inside of the freshly launched Raw to the Core, whose crew are still tuning the boat up and working out how to get the most out of the new platform. The downhill ride was very exciting with both of the leading trimarans pushing the limit of their leeward bows’ buoyancy several times. Further back, Carbon Kopy was being pushed by APC Max with Allyacht Spars coming into the fray as well. The upwind leg again saw the trimarans and catamarans split left and right respectively, but Bob and Kim on Voodoo Spirit were on fire, sailing with the central hull of their trimaran just skimming the surface of the water. As the lead boats approached the top mark for the final time, Voodoo Spirit had consolidated her lead, followed by Trilogy and Raw to the Core. Coming up to the finish line under big spinnakers Raw to the Core was bearing down on Trilogy, but just failed to take second place over the line by one second in a last minute gybe manoeuvre. A minute further back was Carbon Kopy, with a further thirty seconds to APC Max and Allyacht Spars closely behind, followed by Wilparina II a couple more minutes astern. Most of the remainder of the fleet had a close tussle about ten minutes in arrears of the carbon farrier (Wilparina II).

The series is shaping up to be one of the most exciting for many years with five or six boats in contention for line honours in each race. The pace is extremely quick, demonstrated by the fact that the Farrier F82-R and Corsair Sprinter are back in mid fleet. Keith Glover is leading the regatta after the first day’s racing with a win and a second place on OMR Rating, closely followed by Bob and Kim Hutching on Voodoo Spirit with a third and a first.

Tomorrow’s passage race from Melbourne to Geelong is sure to be a nail biter with many of the crews out to prove a point.
