The River Sleeps
by Event media/Sail-World on 29 Dec 2005
After the strong winds and high seas of the last two days the last eight yachts in the Heemskirk Consolidated 2005 Melbourne to Hobart fleet are being frustrated by the lack of wind, as they move into the Derwent River.
The Derwent is almost windless now and the tide is currently flowing out and will not turn until about 4 am. Consequently, after two days of hard running, the yachts that are trying to finish can expect to experience some frustration before they finish.
James Ryssenbeck’s Sayer Sumo 101 Runaway has finished the race in fifth position over the line, a welcome achievement for this young but talented crew on not just their first Melbourne to Hobart race but their first major ocean race.
Tony Warren’s Beyond Outrageous has made their radio call from White Rock and is expected to cross the line sometime around 00:30 hours.
Robin Hewitt and Trevor Huggard on Yoko are just passing White Rock and will probably arrive at 01:30 on Friday morning.
Mark Buckley’s New Morning II is abeam of Cape Queen Elizabeth another terrific performance by a new skipper to this race and has an ETA of 03:30.
By Order of the Secretary (BOOTS) is expected around 06:00. Rough Red is near South East Cape and can be expected to arrive at 09:30 with Avenger just behind them at South Cape and should appear another hour later.
Zest is still dealing with 30 knot north westerlies off Maatsuyker Island and will be expected later in the day on Friday.
