Snow-Hansen and Evans take Tanner Cup Trials

by Richard Gladwell on 5 Nov 2005
Start of trhe second race of the final day of the North Harbour Tanner Cup Trials John Ellingham
Carl Evans has won the Auckland Tanner Cup Trials. Paul Snow-Hansen won the North Harbour Trials.

Evans had a very consistent final day winning all races and extended his lead from the opening rounds of the series, last week. Luke Deegan sailed a very consistent series to finish second overall, but had his work cut out, when he was DSQ'd for a rule infringment, mid-series.

Paul Snow-Hansen was another to suffer at the hands of the Protest Committee, after being caught on port tack in a startline incident in the second race. An indifferent series (by his standards)on the opening weekend gave the diminutive Snow-Hansen a difficult task - particularly against a competitor of the calibre of Daniel Willcox, and the fresh winds that prevailed for the final day of racing.

The game evened up a little when Willcox had the mis-fortune to suffer a gear breakage just before the start of the penultimate race - in which he was unable to start. Repairs effected, Willcox was fired up going into the last race, but had to have Snow-Hansen finish back in the fleet. The two - who in anyone's book would seem destined for great competitive saiing careers - had a great battle, with Snow-Hansen finishing second, and close enough to the race winner, Willcox to win the Selection Trial series.

Third overall was Susannah Pyatt, who finished five points adrift of Willcox. Pyatt also finished top girl, and will go to the P class Nationals with a real chance of a podium place and will be favourite for the Dame Naomi James Trophy fro top female skipper in the series.
