The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron will conduct its annual Pidgeon-Girdis Dockside Yacht Race for competing Type 1 and 2 Trailer boats and fixed keel monohull and multihull yachts over 4.8 metres that are on the register of a recognised sailing/yacht club on Saturday 13 October.
This annual classic event on the Squadron’s calendar of events is raced from the ‘Coffee Pots’ beacons at the entrance of Brisbane River, up the Brisbane River and finishing at the city location of the Dockside Apartment Hotel at Kangaroo Point.
A unique event, many bayside boat owners take their yachts past the Port of Brisbane, under the Gateway Bridge and past the Brisbane suburbs of Pinkenba, Lytton, Murrarie, Queensport, Colmslie, Hamilton, Bulimba, Newstead, Hawthorne and New Farm.
Major sponsor, the Pidgeon-Girdis Group, have supported the event since its inception. A Past Commodore of the RQYS, Nick Girdis is enormously proud to have his company involvement in the race, and will be dockside to welcome yachts, skippers and crews to the Dockside Wharf where the race presentations will take place.
This year’s event is also proudly supported by Anthonys Fine Jewellery and Southcorp Wines, with some spectacular prizes to be awarded for line honours and overall placings as well as a sponsor’s prize draw, in which each competing yacht is entered.
A number of RQYS powerboats will accompany the yachts on their journey up the Brisbane River to provide support for the fleet and to participate in their own Brisbane River quiz as they pass the many places of historical interest and significance on the River.
