Latest ISAF World Sailing Rankings

by ISAF on 4 Aug 2005
Three new leaders rise to the top spots in this release of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings with 2005 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Champion Paige Railey (USA) leading the charge in the Laser Radial.

At the other end of the scale, seven-time World Champion Robert Scheidt (BRA), regains the lead of the Laser Rankings as he starts his Beijing 2008 Star campaign, whilst Ekaterina Skoudina/Diana Krutskikh/Tatiana Larsteva (RUS), take over the top spot in the Yngling.

Across the majority of the fleets, this release of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings acts as a precursor to a busy summer of sailing that will result in titles decided in the ISAF Grade C1 Laser, Laser Radial, Finn, Star, Tornado and 49er European Championships, the ISAF Grade C1 Laser and Star North American Championships and the ISAF Grade W 470, 49er, Finn and Laser World Championships, before the next Rankings’ release of 5 October.

The major event in the current Rankings’ period, the ISAF Grade W Yngling World Championship on Lake Mondsee, Austria, produces a change at the top of the Rankings, with Skoudina/Krutskikh/Larsteva finally knocking Kristin Wagner/Anna Holl/Christina Holl (GER) off the top spot.

Spain and the Ukraine also have three sailors in top three positions, whilst Great Britain still leads the way, with six top three places. However, with Scheidt overtaking Paul Goodison (GBR) in the Laser, Britain now only has one number one spot, a record trumped by the Ukraine, who still lead both the Mistral Rankings.

Outside the senior circuit, July’s big event was the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Busan, Korea. This is included on the Rankings as an ISAF Grade 2 event and thanks to her second ISAF Youth Worlds gold medal, Railey is the last of the three new leaders in this Rankings’ release.

Apart from these changes, a flat calm extends over a large proportion of the Rankings, but between now and the next Rankings’ release of 5 October, the winds of change look certain to blow as the established names face their latest challengers.

The next release of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings will be the 5 October.
