Rechichi/Parkinson lead Aussie efforts in Kiel

by Di Pearson on 27 Jun 2005 Australian athletes have continued their dream run at Kiel Week in Germany and with only one day remaining, Elise Rechichi/Tessa Parkinson remain at the top of the leaderboard in the Womens 470 event.

With nine races under their belts, the West Australian girls have scored four wins from nine races to lead their nearest counterparts, Sabine Walter/Antje Struckat (GER) by eight points, with another German pairing, Stefanie Rothweiler/Vivien Kussatz a further nine points away in third place.

The second Aussie pairing of Lauren Jeffries/Rike Ziegelmayer will be proud of their current seventh place overall too.

In the Mens 470, Mat Belcher/Nick Behrens (AUS) are doing a good job too in fourth place overall, behind new leaders, Michael Anderson-Mitterling/David Hughes (USA), closely followed by Sven and Kalle Coster (NED) and Dimitri Berezkin/Alexander Zibin (ARG).

British genius, Paul Goodison, seemingly cannot put a foot wrong in Kiel, with six wins from 10 races to lead the Laser class by a handy eight points to China’s Matias Del Solar, with Robert Scheidt (BRA) in third place, 16 points behind the leader.

Australia’s Tom Slingsby is back up in sixth place, scoring a seventh place in Race 10, his fellow Aussie competitor, Brendan Casey, has fallen off the wagon with a 39th in the same race, which drops him down to a disappointing 24th.

Looking set to win the Womens Laser Radial, Paige Railey (USA) has lost her lead to Gintare Volungeviciute (LIT) by one point, with Petra Niemann (GER) in third.

Australia’s Krystal Weir, still trying to come to grips with her light air sailing, had a disastrous 27th in the latest Race 11, but stays in the top ten in ninth place. This is just the time for her to put in some light-weather practice.

Other Australian results show Robbie Lovig/Glen Douglas (AUS) 11th in the Tornado and Josh Beaver 29th in the Finn – an earlier Black Flag result not helping his cause.
