Mercedes-Benz to sponsor Team Alinghi

by IBI Magazine on 14 Jun 2005
DaimlerChrysler has announced that its luxury car division, Mercedes-Benz, will act as an official supplier to the Swiss sailing team in preparation for the America's Cup in 2007.

Team Alinghi, which won the 31st America's Cup in 2003, was the first European team to win the trophy since the introduction of the race in 1851. As an official supplier, Mercedes will provide vehicles for the entire Swiss team, which is being led by German sports director, Jochen Schümann.

‘The America's Cup stands for absolute superiority in sailing,’ says the company. ‘To have won this trophy is to have succeeded in one of the greatest sporting achievements ever, as it requires perfect coordination of the latest technology, competent handling, flexibility and team spirit from its participants.

'As far as technological and innovative leadership are concerned, the brand claims of Mercedes-Benz are in complete harmony with the high-tech and specialist lifestyle involved in sailing, as well as the passion and professional attitude required of the Alinghi team,’ Schümann said.

Team Alinghi has already moved to Valencia, Spain, where the first Acts in 2005 (Acts 4 & 5) will take place from June 15-26. The team's main base in Valencia will be officially opened later this year, providing the group with optimal working and training conditions.
