Il Pifferaio Magico unstoppable after three days

by Christina Pandapas on 11 Jun 2005
Piero Mortari’s GS 40R Il Pifferaio Magico took the lead from the outset and went on to take victory over the line and in corrected time, to hold the overall lead Motari established yesterday.

After setting off from the stunning Gulf of Cala de Volpe, the fleet headed north past Mortoriotto island before rounding the Monaci group of islands and racing back down to the Gulf of Pevero and the finish. In the Cruising Class, it was a close race between Anna Bolina (GS 56) and Tuamata (GS 50), with the smaller boat leading on the windward leg but losing ground rounding the Monaci islands, allowing the 56-footer to pass her. In the Racing Division, following Il Pifferaio Magico in today’s race were Sagola in second and Vahine’ 5 in third.

With three races run and only one more remaining, the overall ranking has Il Pifferaio Magico in first place with two firsts and one second, followed by Sagola and Vahine 5 in second and third respectively. In fourth place overall is Nessuno, which leads the cruising yachts.

Tomorrow is the fourth and final race of this 18th edition of the Grand Soleil Cup. The prize giving will take place tomorrow evening on the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s Piazza Azzurra and consist of awards for Cruising, Racing and Overall.
