Shorthand weekend of sailing and cricket

by Peter McCorquodale on 18 May 2005
The Shorthanded Sailing Association of Australia will again hold its annual Shorthanded Pittwater to Port Stephens yacht race on the June long weekend, starting Friday 10th June and this year we are delighted to have the support of Rolly Tasker Sails – Australia.

This classic race on the SSAA’s calender is famous, not only for close and competitive racing, but also for the post-race celebrations on the Sunday, when the skippers and crew, family and friends let their hair down at Wandin Valley Estate vineyard and winery, situated in the Lovedale area in the lower Hunter Valley.

As Wandin Valley Estate is up for sale, this may be your last chance to participate in this unique event. After the success of our first race this winter, the Botany Bay race on April 10th, that boasted 18 starters, we are looking forward to having a competitive fleet.

Racing starts at 2000hrs in Pittwater, so all yachts should have arrived at D’Albora Marina in Nelson Bay by mid morning, Saturday. The rest of the day is for relaxing, ready for the coach trip on Sunday morning to Wandin Valley Estate in Lovedale Road, Hunter Valley.

After the prize presentation lunch in the cricket pavilion, when products of the vineyard are enthusiastically sampled, all competitors will face up to a challenge which can be as tough as the ocean; the annual Skippers versus Crew Cricket Match for the Wineglass Cup. The Crews’ youth and vigour is well matched to the Skippers’ age and treachery, so over the twelve years the match has been played, the honours are about even.

At a time where worldwide interest in short handed and solo sailing is increasing – from the up-coming OSTAR to Ellen Macarthur’s recent record circumnavigation, this race offers an entry into this demanding form of ocean racing – at an achievable level. Whilst challenging, this type of racing is easily undertaken by anyone with a capable yacht, common sense and the commensurate experience.

The Rolly Tasker Sails – Australia Pittwater to Port Stephens Short Handed Yacht Race is a Cat 3 plus liferaft race.

As pre-bookings for berths have been limited, your early registration is recommended.

Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and Entry Form are on the website www.ssaa.com.au.
