Woollahra Sailing Club to represent at Worlds'

by Media Services on 3 May 2005
Woollahra Sailing Club has a great history when it comes to it members representing at Olympic, State, National and World level - and this year is no different.

Club achievements include Olympian Nicky Bethwaite in the Yingling class at Athens, Kevin Lim representing Malaysia in the Laser class at Athens, Sydney 200 and Atlanta, Brett Beyer two World title wins in the Laser class.

Right now, Woollahra’s 49er crews are busy training for the World’s in Moscow. Julian Bethwaite (designer of the 49er) and his young son Harry head the line-up, with David Madden and Emmett Lazich also ready to pack their boats into the container for Moscow.

With the Laser world titles in Brazil this year, Brett Beyer, hoping to find himself on the podium again, is already training most evenings.

Woollahra’s Flying Dutchman fleet is also busy training. Norman Rydge and Richard Scarr have ordered a new boat to be built in Germany, to contest three world titles (Hungary, USA, Spain) over a 16 month period.

The 29er fleet is also training hard, with Seve Jarvin and Will Critharis joining forces to take on the Worlds fleet in San Francisco. Joining them are John Winning Jnr, Euan McNicol and Jackie Bonnitcha.

Keeping with tradition, Woollahra’s juniors are working hard in the Laser, MJ and F1 classes, including doing fitness sessions and sail training as they look to their future in the adult ranks.

Woollahra has always been a great training ground for producing champions, and with all these World titles taking place, there is a good chance of more to come.

Newcomers and experienced alike are invited to join in on training and development at Woollahra SC, where boat storage and membership is available and a winter program is in place.
