Following its capsize in Bass Strait during the 2004 Rolex Sydney Hobart race after losing it’s canting keel, the rebuild of Grant Wharington’s super maxi Skandia has almost come to fruition – something many said could not be done, or at least not in this time frame.
In record time, the capsized 98ft Skandia has been rebuilt, and will campaign in Europe in July, with a new graphic ‘look’ and some exciting changes to her configuration and she promises to be faster than ever.
Skandia’s hull will be moved by low loader from Wild Thing Yachting’s shed in Mornington to the Docklands in Melbourne, Victoria this Sunday, May 1, departing from Mornington at approximately 05.00 EST
Grant Wharington and his crew can’t wait to get his massive yacht floating and racing again and thanks OD Transport for all their help!
'We are all delighted and relieved to have almost reached the light at the end of the tunnel on the rebuild project.
'Whilst it has been tough, we have used this opportunity to improve the maxi and she promises to be even faster than before.
'We will put the rig in next week and get out on the bay for some testing – that will be a fantastic feeling I am sure,' Wharington enthused.
One of the many major events Wharington will contest is Skandia Cowes Week – on behalf of his sponsor!
