Tow Truck again

by Al Constable on 19 Mar 2005 Anthony Paterson. Brett Philby and the Lake Macquarie crew from the Mumm 30 Tow Truck look to have won the 2005 Sydney to Mooloolaba race on IRC handicap.

The same crew won the 2003 race on IRC handicap in similar conditions, with the smaller, lighter boats sailing with a southerly front taking handicap honours from the larger boats.

With six boats still on the water official results will come later today, with the Mike Freebairn skippered Ray White Koomooloo still 28 miles from the finish, the only boat likely to change the podium positions.

As it stands, its a Mumm 30 benefit, with second place going to Gladstone’s Port Curtis Sailing Club entry, Jeff Paul’s Mumm 30 Immigrant.

Currently third is the Beneteau 44.7 First National Real Estate. First National’s skipper Michael Spies will have to wait some hours yet to see if the veteran Koomooloo can find some breeze to bring her home and take away his current third place.

Mike Freebairn just reported from Koomooloo

‘We will be the last boat to finish and have just rounded Cape Moreton. I am not sure what time we would have had to finish to win but it would have been around 10am. We will be about an hour outside that.

We have had a good race and have been pushing quite hard. A few rain squalls have cost us some time. The southerly change progressed much quicker than we would have liked! Probably only a couple of hours later and we would have been ok.

We are running home under spinnaker in magic conditions finally with a clear sky!'
