Eight student crews from universities from all over the world arrived at La Rochelle to compete for the 36th edition of the Student Yachting World Cup. The competition will last for five days and they will be sailing on “Grand Surprise” to win the Student World Cup.
Seven countries are represented in the race: Canada (Queen’s University), England (Loughborough University and Southampton University), Ireland (Cork Institute of Technology), Japan (Kobe University), Scotland (University of Strathclyde), United States (California Maritime Academy) and École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne from Switzerland, the current titleholders.
The teams arrived on November 1st and a big dinner took place in the “SRR” (Society of Regattas of La Rochelle) where all the participants displayed “specialties” from their regions such as Swiss chocolate, English beverage & Japanese games. It was an opportunity for the crews to get to know each other and to discuss with the event's organizers.
In the morning of November 2nd the Jury and the Committee delivered the first briefing to the skippers, whereas the crews practiced in the afternoon.The day ended with the opening ceremony that was offered by the city hall of La Rochelle in the Maritime Museum.
