Tornado Worlds – Greek defenders retain the lead on Day 2

by Icarus Sailing Media on 14 Jun 2016
Fleet in action on day two - 2016 Tornado World Championship Martina Barnetova
Sun, wind and rain on and off – these were the ingredients of the weather kitchen on Monday, the second race day of the world championship of the Tornado class in Lindau.

The third race started at 2pm with southerly winds. Already on the second downwind leg the fleet was far stretched over the whole course. A sudden wind change led to 90 degree course adjustment in the third and last round. A shortening of the course is not allowed by class rules.

The Greeks Nikolaos Mavros and Alexandros Tagarapoulos got the bullet. They couldn’t finish yesterday the first race, but came third in the second race. Todays second was the Australian Brett Burvill and his crew, the 14 year old Estela Jentsch from Bavarian Segelclub Füssen/Forggensee (SCFF). Third came today Denise and Kurt Waibel from Yacht-Club Hard (Austria), which benefited from the advantage of their homefield.

Even if they finished at forth place, yesterdays winners Iordanis Paschalidis and Konstantinos Trigonis (Nautical Club of Thessaloniki, Greece), are still leading in the overall score defending their title so far.

Overall second at present is the team Bob and Marc Baier from Forggensee (SCFF), which came ninth in today's race (10 points). “We are rather a heavy crew with 160 kg”, Bob sad yesterday, “which causes difficulties in light winds.”

Also ten points scored are for Burvill/Jentsch on third place, followed by Bill Caunce and Aaron Duncan from New Zealand. Best team of Lake Constance are currently Markus Betz and Monika Schuster from SMC Ueberlingen on place 11. Unfortunately the wind was easing after the first few had finished. But we were lucky the announced thunderstorm in the West part of the lake didn’t come through and didn’t effect the race any further.

After the boats were waiting in idle position for wind until 5pm the race officers Paul Bastard and Markus Gielen decided to have no more races today.
Races will be continued on Tuesday.

Results after three of 10 races (32 crews from 11 nations):
1. Iordanis Paschalidis/Konstantinos Trigonis, GRE, six points
2. Bob und Marc Baier, GER (Füssen), 14 points
3. Brett Burvill/Estela Jentsch, AUS/GER, 14 points
4. Bill Caunce/Aaron Duncan, NZL, 20 points
5. Gavin Colby/Billy Leonard, AUS, 21 points
6. Maria Tsaousidou/Michalis Papadopoulos, GRE, 26 points
