Julian Fernandez Neckelmann clutches advantage at J/70 North Americans

by Julie and Christopher Howell on 22 May 2016
2016 J/70 North American Championship - Day 2 Christopher Howell
2016 J/70 North American Championship - Two more races went in the books on Saturday at the Torqeedo J/70 North American Championship hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook, Texas. For Julian Fernandez Neckelmann’s Flojito y Cooperando, it was feast or famine as a 13 in the opening meeting briefly dropped him out of the regatta lead.

But a bullet in the day’s only other contest gave the Mexican team 17 net points, four in front of Bruce Golison’s Midlife Crisis (who recorded a five, eight today). Bruno Pasquinelli’s Stampede holds third place with 28 points, with Glenn Darden’s Hoss hot on his heals with 29. Racing concludes Sunday.

In breeze around six knots, Pasquinelli bested Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity, Robert Hughes’ Heartbreaker and the remaining 36 teams representing Brazil, Japan, Mexico and the USA. Following a pause to allow the wind to stabilize (which it did at 10 knots), Neckelmann and teenager Gannon Troutman’s Pied Piper renewed their Charleston Race Week battle, with Neckelmann earning the win. Brian Keane’s Savasana was third. Jack Franco’s 3 Ball JT holds a healthy lead in the 10-boat Corinthian division.
