Malaysia’s Puteri Harbour Marina was presented with a level three International Clean Marina Accreditation by the Marina Industries Association (MIA) at the Singapore Yacht Show (Apr 7-10).

The International Clean Marina Program is a voluntary accreditation program for marinas, yacht clubs, boat clubs, slipways, boat yards and associated industry operators and is administered by the MIA, the peak body representing the marina industry in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Puteri Harbour is located at Iskandar Puteri, the narrow-most point along The Straits of Johor separating Singapore from the Asia continent. The prestigious waterfront development offers three marinas - public, mega yacht and a private marina - designed to cater to the sailing community.

MIA Executive Officer Colin Bransgrove presented the award to Puteri Harbour’s Senior General Manager Jeff Saw Seong Keat.

“Achieving a Level three accreditation requires a solid commitment from participating marinas and the rigorous process includes a site inspection assessed against a 103-point checklist,” says Bransgrove

The site audit of key operational areas including inspections of mechanical activities, boat maintenance and storage, fueling, facility management, workshop, mechanical, shipwright and boat repair, emergency planning and equipment and boater education. A written report with detailed feedback is then provided to the marina.

“We are very proud to be the first marina in Malaysia to be accredited through the MIA International Clean Marina Program,” says Keat. “We are committed to ensuring our marina is of the highest environmental standard.”

The goal of the program is to reduce ‘non-point source pollution’ associated with boating/marina facilities, and to promote clean water, clean air and thriving marina industry businesses. The program was initially developed over a two-year period in consultation with major city councils in Australia; State Environment/Heritage and EPA agencies, the marina industry and operators of similar Clean Marina programs on the east and west coasts of the USA, the UK and in continental Europe.
