Cheers for Lucifarr
by Lisa Ratcliff on 5 Aug 2004
The arrival of Mark Davies 1987-built Lucifarr at the finish line off Southport's Main Beach at 4.32pm yesterday afternoon officially marked the end of the Ingles Sydney Gold Coast Race, which began more than four days ago from Sydney Harbour.
A large group of well wishers, including Graeme Ingles, the managing director of naming rights sponsor Ingles Group, greeted the tired crew and gave them a rousing three cheers for continuing on to the finish line rather than taking the option of retiring in the light conditions.
For Davies and his crew, this was their first serious ocean race and they proved they have the perseverance to take on the next big events on their planned offshore calendar - the Category 1 Gosford to Lord Howe Island and 60th anniversary Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht races.
‘Even though it was a frustrating race for us, we really enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward to stepping up again,’ said Davies last night
