Roads and Maritime launches program to dispose of expired flares
by Roads and Maritime Services on 21 Mar 2016

flare NSW Maritime
The Roads and Maritime has launched a program to help boaters dispose of expired flares, with mobile collections set up along the NSW coastline.
Flares signal that you are in trouble and provide an exact location for searching aircraft or vessels. Only ignite them when rescuers are in view and can spot your flare.
It is an offence to set off flares except in an emergency.
Most flares have a use-by date of three years and they must be replaced before the expiry date. Penalties apply. More information about flares
here.
The collection program to dispose of out-of-date flares will start on Sunday 10 January at the Evans Head boat ramp between 6am and 9am and will travel to boat ramps along the NSW coast until the end of the boating season in May 2016.
Collection points
Expired flare disposal is available via Pentarch mobile collection points at the following locations.
Please note: Flare collection is no longer available at service centres, registries or maritime sites.
