2016 Rolex Farr 40 Worlds – Substantial shuffle to the scoreboard

by Jennie Hughes on 18 Feb 2016
Day 3 - 2016 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship Rolex/ Kurt Arrigo http://www.regattanews.com
Three races took place today on the Manly Circle in an 8-10 knot sou’ easterly with a three metre swell. With just two races left and a substantial shuffle to the scoreboard, the 2016 World Title is still very much up for grabs.

Guido Belgiorno-Nettis and the Transfusion crew are currently in third place on equal points with Flash Gordon and four points behind Championship leader Plenty. Belgiorno-Nettis said it was a hard day on the water. “The conditions were tough with the swell and light winds, which are not ideal for us. I suspect everyone found it difficult driving today and it certainly took its toll on our team. The good news is we have caught up to Flash Gordon. Plenty are a great team and they sailed better than Flash and ourselves today. We are still very close and anything can happen in two races. We are going in positive against two past World Champions...all we can do is sail the best we can.”

Australian Class President Rod Jones and the Kindergarten crew won the last race of the day and the Skipper couldn’t be happier to have gained two places and be in the top five.

Forty Skipper Stephen Barlow bounced back after some low scores in the previous two days to snatch a fourth in race nine. The crew has been working hard on rig tuning and sail selection and they are happy with their ninth position. “We were a little more consistent today which we weren’t yesterday. There has been some fantastic sailing down the bottom end of the fleet and realistically, I would be more than happy to walk away with an eighth or ninth. The competition is unbelievably hard and I think there are some broken hearts and expectations within the fleet.”

The final two races will take place offshore on the Manly Circle at 1200hrs tomorrow, Friday, 19 February 2016 where the 2016 Rolex Farr 40 National Champion will be decided.
