Perfection at Gen Y Couta Boat Day

by Ben Fels on 17 Jan 2016
Krystal Weir and Sally Law Tom Walker
During the peak of summer Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club set aside Saturday 16 Jan for Gen Y. The day saw Div One boats carrying at least four Gen Y sailors and Div Two at least two. Gen Y helms were optional.

The initiative was led by Sailing Committee member Sally Law and 49er sailor Sam Phillips and saw 25 Couta Boats racing with over 100 Gen Ys on board with experience levels ranging from Olympians to first time on a boat.

A sunny 15 knot south easterly was the perfect weather for the day with each division’s start getting away cleanly on the first go, despite a flood tide edging the fleet closer to the start line.

Racing was competitive between boats with the clubs Safe, Fair and Fun mantra clearly on display ensuring everyone enjoyed themselves and keeping it incident free. One surprise for the race committee was the boats that signed off via Facebook and messenger. Not what was expected, but it worked.

Back on shore sailors enjoyed a BBQ and some quiet refreshments that turned into quite a party on the western as a pre-cursor to the Commodores Cocktail Party in the hardstand Marque.

There were races within races with bragging rights available for Line Honours and Performance Handicap results.

Line Honours went to in Romy skippered by Jack Abbot, edging out baby boomers Jeffrey Richardson in Georgia and Grant Smith in Nepean.

Jack Lloyd with eight on board Gemfish was first across the line amongst the instructors, though Tom Trotman and Michael Fels beat them on the all-important handicap results in Leeuwin, initially signing on with eight POB and collecting a couple more on the way out to the start.

Division Two was won by Enterprise ahead of Kitty Miller and Morning Star.

Gen Y skippers took the prizes in Div One.
