Laser Radial World Championship - Day 1 surprises

by Rob Kothe on 21 Nov 2015
Lijia Xu (CHN) - 2015 World Laser Radial Women's Championship Oman Sail
Day one racing at the Laser Radial World Championship in Oman began in a light six to eight knots breeze which gradually built to 10 knots across the day. First up winner in the yellow fleet was Paige Railey USA with Evi Van Acker BEL second and Paloma Schmidt Gutierrez PER third.

In the second yellow fleet race, winner was Josefin Olsson SWE got the gun from Martha Caterina Faraguna ITA with Philipine Van Aanholt ARU third.

In the blue fleet Lily Xu CHN, the 2012 Olympic Gold medallist who has not sailed seriously since London who was first to the top mark in her other race, but lost places on the downwind run, as the rust showed. However, she won the second race with Mathilde De Kerangat FRA in second and Pernelle Michon FRA third.

After two races the overall leader is world number two ranked sailor Anne-Marie Rindom DEN, fresh from her third in Abu Dhabi with London Olympic silver medallist Marit Bouwmeester NED second and Oren Jacob ISR third, all tied on nine points.

Then in fourth place is Lily Xu CHN, fifth is Philipine Van Aanholt ARU, sixth Manami Doi JPN, seventh is the London Olympic bronze medallist Evi Van Acker BEL, eighth Erika Reineke USA, ninth Tina Mihelic CRO and 10th Tuula Tenkanen FIN.

A look at the leader board shows the influence of Laser Radial coach Jon Emmett who was instrumental in securing Gold for Lily Xu in London, his current charge Israeli Oren Jacob, was a very inexperienced silver fleet racer when he started coaching her, and there is a long way to go in this regatta but its great start for Oren, who has shown she has what it takes to sail at the top level.

[Sorry, this content could not be displayed]

Lily Xu's day one result must have even surprised her, Lily who dominated the class in the year before the Weymouth regatta in 2012, has put her University studies ahead of her sailing, has said she is not campaigning for Rio, but who knows a good result in this regatta might change her mind.

You know you can't win a regatta on the first day but you might lose it, US Sailing's Paige Railey followed her opening race win with a disappointing 40th and she is now 40th overall, with her drop already sailed and very surprisingly the top British Radial sailor Alison Young had a very ordinary day with a 37 and 32 to be sitting in 76th place overall.
