2015-16 Cherub NSW State Championships - Round one

by Rolf Lunsmann on 26 Oct 2015

Alison Chapman and Andrew Stephenson from Drummoyne Sailing Club hold the narrowest of leads after the first round of the 2015-16 NSW Cherub State Championship sailed at Belmont 16ft Sailing Club over the weekend.

In some of the first fresh breezes of the new season a fleet of 27 Cherubs faced the starters for the first three of eleven scheduled races for the Championship. Chapman and Stephenson, sailing a new Barley Mk1 Cherub “Action”, built by Stephenson over winter, proved that they will be a force to be reckoned with throughout the coming summer of Cherub racing. In their first race in the new boat on Saturday they were quickly in the lead only to be overtaken on the last downwind leg of the short race, by 2009 Cherub National Champions Kris Fay and Nigel Blatchford from Belmont in “Son of Wally”.

In Race Two the fortunes were overturned as Chapman and Stephenson raced to the lead and were never headed. “Son of Wally” held off the remainder of the fleet to tie up the overall points overnight, with Kirk Mitchell and James Warner from Drummoyne third.

In Sunday’s long format Race Three, Chapman and Stephenson demonstrated the speed of their new boat, clearing out from the fleet for a convincing win. Behind them the racing was tight with Fay and Blatchford holding on for second to stay just a single point off the series lead. Nicole Barnes and Jeremy Johnson from Lane Cove, who improved with each race of the round, finished third.

The weekend’s fleet included two boats from Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Sailing Club the first ever entries from the northern Sydney Club. In addition to Alison Chapman, there were ten other female skippers among the 27 entries with three women in the top ten at the end of the round.

The second round of the Championships will be sailed at Drummoyne Sailing Club on 21-22 November.
