North Sails offer coaching afternoon at STACK WinChams and loft tours

Along with STACK, leading Business Interiors company and naming sponsor of the regatta for five years, North Sails is proud to support this event taking place at Murrays Bay Sailing Club Friday second - Sunday October 4th. The regatta has a focus on the junior classes and to help kick things off North Sails is providing an afternoon of junior coaching by leading North Sails One Design coaches on Wednesday 30th September.

In conjunction with Yachting New Zealand's two day coaching clinic to help juniors prepare for the regatta, North Sails coaches will be focusing on tuning, trim and sail care for Optimist, P Class and Starling.


On the Thursday October 1st before the event, North Sails will be conducting free loft tours for junior sailors interested in seeing the process of how their sails are made, and will include an explanation of their leading 3D sail technology. Come prepared with questions!

Tours will take place at 10am, 1pm and 3pm. Please email reception.newzealand@northsails.com or phone 09 359 5999 to book - bookings are essential. (S-W: This tour is highly, highly recommended - you will learn heaps. Get a party together from your club or others in your area.)

Watch out on Saturday for the North Sails tender with the chance to get a free drink bottle and other North Sails goodies!


Coach profiles

Derek Scott- Manager of North Sails One Design New Zealand and the resident expert for all things dinghy related. Winner of P-Class Tanner and Tauranga cups in 1995. 470 and Hobie 16 National Champion in 2006. 3.7 National Champion in 2008, 2011 and 2012.

Andrew Wills - former Optimist World Champion Coach and NZL Youth Olympic team coach. Regularly races in top level regattas around the world including Melges 32, Farr 40's, Maxi's, Superyachts and Etchells. Multiple world and national champion in various classes.

Matt Steven - Fresh from winning the 18 Foot Skiff international champs onboard Team Yamaha. second at the Red Bull Youth Americas Cup 2013, Elliot 5.9 National Champion 2014, OK Dinghy Junior World Champ 2008 and 2010 (3rd overall). Former NZL Laser squad. Matt brings a wealth of coaching experience in dinghies and keelboats to the North Sails team.

Hayden Whitburn - Twice Elliott 5.9 National Champion, twice Sunburst National champ and part of the NZ 18 Foot skiff team for the last few years.Winner of the International Warren Jones match racing event with Phil Robertson, and the Noumea cup with Mike Bullot. Currently sailing an Etchell and OK Dinghy and his new role is partly supporting the One Design department along with coaching and supporting.
