2015 EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championship - Day 2

by John Friend on 1 Aug 2015
2015 EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championship - Day 2 Christian Chardon
Race day two in Brest: a full-on afternoon for the young European sailors competing in the fourth edition of the EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championship.

The first races started as scheduled at 12:00, but soon enough, Aeolus, the god of the winds, got under the skin of the officials and sailors, who then had to wait on the water for the wind to change direction and increase in speed.

After a change of course to adapt to the new weather conditions, a second and a third race went on in the afternoon in the 420 and Laser classes in eight to nine knots wind.

420

No change at the top of the general classification tonight for both boys and girls. Jenny Cropieu and Emma Baker (GBR), as well as Théo Carayon and Erwan Lucas (FRA) lead the fleet, despite a difficult day for the French pair, who failed to finish in the top three.

Laser Radial

It was a great day for Gianmarco Planchestainer (ITA), who took over the top position after lying third in the general classification following day one. But the young Italian will have to keep a close eye on Jack Codsan (GBR) who trails him by a single point.

It’s very close at the top of the Girls fleet, with two Italians, Carolina Albano and Francesca Bergamo, sharing the lead overnight. On their heels is French sailor Louise Cervera.

On race area Bravo, the RSX, 29er and SL16 racing area, the course had to be changed for the second RS:X race and the third 29er and SL16 race, in order to find the best possible conditions.

RSX

Local boy Titouan LE BOSQ (FRA) had to concede top spot to Matteo Evangelisti (ITA) who won the second race today.

As for the Girls, Mariam Sekhposyan (RUS) and Bérénice Mege (FRA) are sharing the leading position overnight. Another French sailor, Lucie Pianazza sits third at the end of day two.

SL16

Louis Flament and Charles Dorange (FRA) are continuing their run of form with only one race conceded to their opponents today. They keep the overall lead with an impressive four victories out of six races completed so far.

29er

Aleksandra Melzacka and Maja Micinska (POL) are still leading the series in the girls fleet with a perfect day, a victory in each of the three races completed.

As for the boys, Gwendal Nael and Pierre Tydgat (FRA) made consistency pay, because: the young French sailors currently sit at the top of the score card, already with a 10 points lead on Polish competitors Mikolaj Staniul and Kajetan Jablonski.

After two days all fleets have now completed six races, excepting the RS:X, who have finished five. This means that whatever happens over the coming few days, the Medal Races will take place on Sunday, because the minimum required for this to go ahead was four races.

The forecast for Friday is little to no wind in the morning, with a thermal wind building from the beginning of the afternoon. The first start has, therefore, been postponed to 14:00.

What was said today:

Adrien Humeau (SR Brest) – Laser Radial

“I’m really pleased to have won the first race today. I had a good start and rounded the first mark in first position. I came here with a target in mind, which is to finish the week on the podium!”

Maria Erdi (HUN) – Laser Radial

“It was an up and down for me today. I won race one and race three, but I couldn’t compete in race two, because I jumped the start and got a black flag disqualification. I was also disqualified in one of the races yesterday after a protest against me, so now my target has changed slightly, because with these two disqualifications, I will be pleased if I manage to finish the week in the top three.”

Sofie Schone and Line Johanna Thielemann (GER) – 420

“We won the first race, but it was tough today, because we also jumped a start and had to cross the line again. On top of that, the weather conditions were difficult, it was hard to find the right side of the course!”
