49th Governor’s Cup - Did the drone drown?

by Nancy Mellon on 25 Jul 2015
RFBYC vs SDYC Reiter Crossing Mary Longpre
On another beautiful day in Southern California, racing of the Gov Cup 21’s proceeded smoothly, with few penalties. The event was videotaped by a variety of methods, including a drone.

In the last race of the day, between BYC’s team and Chris Weis from Del Rey Yacht Club, as Christophe Killian was rounding the weather mark and was setting his spinnaker for the final run to the finish for the day, the drone hit his spinnaker. His crew of Harrison Vandervort and Jack Martin handled the problem well, the drone fell in the water and the boat sailed over it on the way to the finish. Hopefully the drone survived to fly the next day for the finals of the event.

Most of the teams had finished racing for the day and were on their way back to the yacht club. The teams that finished in the bottom four will be able to watch the racing from spectator boats. When the others return on Saturday, the semi-finals will continue. First Place Gilmour chose to race Chris Weis to decide which will race in the finals of the top two teams. After three races in the first to win three out of five, Lachy has two wins and Chris has one. Christophe Killian, the second place team, is racing against Harry Price of Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, who placed third. Christophe has two wins to Harry’s one.

In the finals for the fifth thru eighth place teams, Fry will race Vose for number five and Thompson will race Sinks for number seven. In their first two races, Fry and Sinks has each won two. Three out of five are needed to decide their finish places.
