With the appointment of Sydney sider Tom Addis, as the navigator of Team Vestas Wind for Legs 8 and 9, there are now three Australian navigators, Andrew Cape on Brunel, Addis on Vestas Wind and Will Oxley on Alvimedica in the closing stages of the 2014-2015 Race.
Oxley is a major force on the Alvimedica team, they are the youngest team in the race by far and Oxley provides the only Round the World credentials for this Turkish-American team.
Now sailing in his fourth Volvo Ocean Race Oxley proved in the last few miles into Lisbon, the value of the detailed preparation for which he is renowned when Alvimedica sailed into third place, leave the overall race leader Abu Dhabi Racing and second placed Dongfeng in their wake.
Alvimedica skipper Charlie Enright credits Oxley with that gain. He told Sail-World today,’ you can debate who is the best offshore navigator in the world but I certainly know that Will Oxley is the best prepared that is for sure.’
Sail-World talked to Oxley about the race so far and Legs 8 and 9 ahead.
