The 50th Anniversary of the 2015 Soling World Championships came to an end yesterday on May 28th, 2015 at Club Velico Castiglione della Pescaia in Tuscany, Italy. Four teams represented Canada in the 45 boat international fleet.
The five-day event saw all kinds of racing conditions, from very light, fluky winds to a strong building northwestern breeze. The sailors were challenged to make quick decisions on the race course and play the shifts.
Canadian husband, wife and son trio from Sarnia Yacht Club, Bill, Joanne and William Abbott capitalized on the shifts taking an early lead and nearly hanging onto the front of the pack until the final two days of racing. Their consistent sailing and strong team work ultimately secured Team Abbott a place on the podium with a silver medal!
Other Canadians sailing in Italy include Peter Hall, Paul Davis and William Hall from Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club finishing eighth and honoured with a special trophy called the Grand Master Bowl.
