Volvo Ocean Race - Il va falloir songer à ajouter une décimale sur les classements intermédiaires. La flotte a quitté Newport depuis déjà 5 jours et c’est en dixièmes de milles que se mesurent les écarts entre les quatre premiers concurrents. Difficile dans ces conditions de parler d’un leader. Team Brunel est en haut du tableau mais Dongfeng Race Team, MAPFRE ou même Abu Dhabi se tiennent en moins d’un mille. Seules les filles de Team SCA semblent avoir décroché mais leur retard de 7,5 milles ne représente pas grand-chose quand il reste la moitié d’un océan à traverser (1 600 milles).

Depuis le départ de l’étape, la situation n’a pas toujours été aussi serrée. Dans un Gulf Stream inconsistant, certains ont réussi à s’échapper alors que d’autres ont cru que tout était terminé. Dans la première catégorie, Team Brunel a réussi à accumuler plus de 20 milles d’avance avant de se faire rattraper par la flotte. Dans le même temps, Dongfeng Race Team fermait la marche avec 35 milles de retard. Difficile de croire, 48 heures plus tard, que ces deux là évoluent côte à côte aujourd’hui en frôlant la zone d’exclusion des glaces.

Dans cette septième étape, les concurrents doivent composer avec deux contraintes. Au nord, la direction de course a délimité une zone d’exclusion pour leur éviter de rencontrer des icebergs – elle descend jusqu’à la latitude de Lisbonne, et au sud, l’anticyclone des Açores n’a rien d’autre à offrir que des vents faibles et le risque de s’engluer dans ces calmes. Tout l’enjeu est donc maintenant de trouver la route la plus profitable. Les bateaux positionnés au nord iront plus vite mais auront plus de route alors que les « sudistes » prendront le virage à la corde avec le risque de s’arrêter dans les graviers.

Selon les dernières estimations, la flotte est attendue à Lisbonne mercredi prochain.
