New Sydney 36 Comes Out Flying
by Andrew Brown on 12 May 2004
Middle Harbour sailor Ray Carless’ new Sydney 36 ‘This Way Up’ joined the CYCA BMW Winter Series on Sunday making an immediate impression.
With gusts of over 20 knots the boat breezed down the first run with several easy gybes when similar sized boats were struggling to gybe and tipping over in the gusty conditions.
Showing just how easy her asymmetric spinnaker system makes gybing.
A beaming Ray Carless said ‘Sunday completely justified my decision to go to an asymmetric pole as we went past one of my old boats rolling and struggling to gibe in these conditions.
With boat speed up to 13 knots running very safely I know I have a boat far higher performing and importantly easier to sail’.
The Sydney 36 racing many similar and larger sized boats carved through the fleet to post the second fastest time in the division a mere 30 seconds behind the custom-built carbon fibre speed machine ‘Cone of Silence’ RPAYC.
Ray came to Sydney Yachts with firm ideas on his ideal yacht. It would have to be, 32’ to 38’, fun, easy to sail and he also liked the idea of asymmetrical spinnakers. Ray also said ‘I thought it was about time I supported the local marine industry and as I was looking for a race boat the logical choice was Sydney Yachts’.
So was born the 2004 Sydney 36 with a fully retractable carbon bowsprit, new IRC optimised keel and composite racing wheel.
Continuing the winning IRC formula set by Sydney Yachts with the Sydney 36 Sports ‘Pamela C’ which won Hamilton Island Race Week IRC in 2000
Ray also said that being able to visit his yacht during construction was a real plus. ‘It gave me the chance to discuss any production issues face to face with the production manager Mark Rowed and also meet the team building my yacht’.
‘The construction detail was quite amazing and gave me a much greater insight into the difference between an imported ‘production yacht’ and what is essentially a semi custom boat hand built by the one team of shipwrights.
This was something the team at Sydney Yachts try
to impress upon you, but is difficult to fully comprehend until you actually see it first hand.
I would recommend that anyone contemplating a new boat purchase would be well served talking to Sydney Yachts or organising a visit to their production facility in Nowra and see for themselves’
