Volvo Ocean Race - El recordman Sidney Gavignet al Dongfeng Race Team

El reputado regatista oceánico francés Sidney Gavinget, que acaba de batir junto al español Álex Pella a bordo del MOD70 Musandam Oman Sail el récord de la vuelta a Irlanda vigente desde hace 22 años, sustituirá al francés Eric Perón a bordo de Dongfeng Race Team en la etapa 7. Ésta dará comienzo el próximo domingo 17 de mayo, y recorrerá las 2.800 millas entre Newport (USA) y Lisboa (Portugal).

La sustitución de Perón es parte del plan de rotaciones que el patrón de Dongfeng, Charles Caudrelier (FR), tenía en mente desde Alicante para permitir a sus tripulantes descansar durante la vuelta al mundo.

'Sidney es un timonel excelente', explicaba Caudrelier. 'Además es un experto en la Volvo Ocean Race, y yo hace tiempo que quería navegar con él. Lo hicimos hace 12 años, y fue muy bien, así que sólo espero que esta vez vaya igual de bien'.



Gavignet ha participado en cuatro ediciones de la Volvo Ocean Race. Se estrenó en 1993-94 a bordo del La Poste de Eric Tabarly, y siguió con el Assa Abloy (2001-02). Ganó con el ABN AMRO ONE (2005-06), y participó por cuarta vez con el PUMA Ocean Racing (2008-09).

Dongfeng Race Team ha mostrado estar en un excelente momento de forma tras ganar la etapa 6 entre Itajaí (Brasil) y Newport (USA), su segunda victoria hasta el momento tras ganar también la etapa 2, y se encuentran ahora a sólo 6 puntos del líder de la general, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. Sin embargo, quieren evitar sobrecargar a sus tripulantes.

'Algunos de ellos están cansados, y la rotación nos permite darles un descanso. Sólo Charles (Caudrelier) y Kevin (Escoffier) han permanecido en el barco desde Alicante. Esperamos que esto siga así', explicaba el director del equipo Burno Dubois.



El segundo cambio en el equipo franco-chino para la última etapa transatlántica afectará al chino Liu Xue, alias ‘Black’, que será sustituido por Yang Jiru, conocido como ‘Wolf'.

'Somos totalmente transparentes al respecto, y lo cierto es que, aunque han superado nuestras expectativas, los regatistas chinos todavía tienen mucho que aprender', añadía Dubois. “Ellos intentan compensar su falta de experiencia pasando más tiempo trabajando en cubierta', añadía.



Tras la etapa 7 hasta Lisboa, la 8 llevará a la flota hasta Lorient (Francia), y la 9, la final, de Lorient a Gotemburgo (Suecia) con una parada de 24 horas en La Haya (Países Bajos).
