Peter Loft Marathon Race - Wetas fly to attack the Moths

A field of 77 dinghies - from Optimists to 18ft Skiffs - were entered in the annual Peter Loft Marathon Race from Bayview Yacht Racing Club.

The fleet had a shorter race this year than the normal 20Km course, due to large swells caused by the South Westerly breeze around Lion Island, the intended destination.

Launching from the beach in a spectacular 'Le Mans' syle start, the Wetas had home advantage as they race regularly on Pittwater with Palm Beach Sailing Club.

Peter Graham and Peter Duross in their Wetas unfurled their screechers after the start and had a very close contest sailing downwind to Barrenjoey Headland - so close that they were side by side as they rounded the turning mark. Geoff Waldon keeping them honest in the third Weta not far behind. Peter Graham then took the lead making good headway into the breeze which was gusting over 20 knots.

Final results in Division One, first place was a Moth, second place went to the Weta of Peter Graham, third to another Moth and Peter Duross was fourth in his Weta.
