Volvo Ocean Race- Through the night a shift helped the Emiratis and the Dutch to gain on the Chinese-French team by them effectively cutting the corner and allowing them to sail less distance.
However these gains are only good on paper. Right now the teams’ next waypoint isn’t necessarily the finish in Newport, and in the next 100 nautical miles they will be approaching the center of the high-pressure.
Almost all the skippers have been saying the race is not even close to over, and there are plenty more opportunities for big gains and losses navigating their way through the approaching park up.
The wind has moderated slightly overnight with between 18-20knots in the 0100 UTC position report to 16-18 in the 0400.
This trend is set to continue over the next 8-10 hours as they fight to be first out the other side of the high.
