By early 2013 ISAF having recognised that what was a potentially valuable event property, the Sailing World Cup, was in fact a mess, with variable formats, organisational structures, quite unattractive for potential global sponsors.
In 2014 the former America's Cup regatta director, Canadian John Craig took on a new position as the Head of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Building on the work already done by ISAF Sailing World Cup Manager Antonio Gonzales de la Madrid, the World Cup has been revamped.
The ISAF Sailing World Cup here in Hyeres on the French Riviera, the third in the season ahead of the finals in Abu Dhabi starts on Wednesday and runs to Sunday is the first ever in the new format.
Changes to the format of the ISAF Sailing World Cup (the premier international sailing series for Olympic class sailors) mean that fleets are restricted, by invitation, to only 40 in each of the ten Olympic class events in what is essentially Gold fleet racing, with fields in many classes similar in size to Olympic fleets.
