Quantum Autumn Short-Handed Series attracts big fleet

by Peter Campbell on 12 Apr 2015 Getting crew to help race their boat can be a problem for many yacht owners during summer, but there was no such difficulty on the River Derwent today when Derwent Sailing Squadron began its popular autumn short-handed series.

A big fleet of 45 yachts raced and all they needed were 89 men and women to handle them, including spinnakers on many boats, compared with almost 300 crew required for a summer harbour race fleet.

This year’s Quantum six-race short-handed series has been expanded to include a three-handed spinnaker division as well as five two-handed divisions, two of them non-spinnaker.

The series is probably the largest short-handed yacht racing series in Australia with 55 boats entered so far. Last year saw 70 boats in one race and more are expected for later events.

Sailing in a chilly sou’wester that ranged from zero to fifteen knots, with some sharper gusts, well-known Bellerive yachtsmen Chris Sheehan and Troy Grafton sailed Sheehan’s Young 88 Saga to victory in Division One (spinnaker), winning on corrected time from Redeemer (Greg Brooks) and Trouble (Dave Willans).

Line honours winner 42 South (Mark Ballard) finished well down the result sheet on corrected time, as did Michael and Michelle Denney’s recently acquired Bakewell-White Z39 Wild West after leading the fleet home in Division Two (non-spinnaker).

First place went to Jim Thorpe’s Beneteau 33.7 Hydrotherapy from Silver Mist (Andrew Sutherland) and Peter Masterton’s Pirate’s Pride.

Veteran sailor Norm Brundle won Division Three (non-spinnaker) in Sailability’s Payne 24, Rotary from Mon Amie (Phil Conyard) and Dynamo (Stephen Davidson) with Allez-Oop (Alan Nelson) having fastest time.

The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s newly acquired Elliott 6s made an impressive debut on the Derwent, finishing first and second across the line and in the same order on handicap in Division Four (spinnaker).

George Peacock sailed Elliott 5 to first place, Rod Chamberlain placing second with Elliott 1. Third place went to Serenity (Graham Hall).

Only two SB20s contested their division, with Hypertronics (Stephen Catchpool) winning a close duel with Brainwave (Scott Brain).

The new three-handed spinnaker division saw David Taylor’s modified Sydney 36 Pisces take fastest time, but first place on corrected time go to the last boat to finish, Phil Mason’s Adams 36 Athena, second to Hot Prospect (Ian Marshall) and third to Wings Three (Peter Haros).
