Le départ de la cinquième étape de la Volvo Ocean Race vient à nouveau d’être reporté en raison du cyclone Pam qui évolue en ce moment au large de la Nouvelle Zélande et qui frapperait de plein fouet la flotte même si elle partait lundi comme annoncé hier.

Knut Frostad, le CEO de la Volvo Ocean Race, a annoncé cette nuit que les six bateaux ne quitteront pas Auckland avant mardi, probablement en fin de journée. « Les conditions sont extrêmement rares sur la course et même pour la Nouvelle Zélande. L’étape ne partira pas avant mardi et ce sera probablement en fin de journée ou dans la soirée. C’est notre plan actuel » a-t-il expliqué en conférence de presse. Une nouvelle annonce aura lieu dimanche à 17h00, heure locale.

Cette décision, prise en concertation avec les skippers a fait l’unanimité. Aucun des six skippers n’envisageait en effet d’aller risquer sa vie et celle de ses équipiers dans les conditions dantesques annoncées. Bouwe Bekking, (Team Brunel) s’est fait le porte-parole des skippers : « ça aurait été complètement dingue d’envoyer des gars dans des vents de 100 nœuds. Ce n’est plus une course dans ces conditions. Si quelqu’un avait cassé dès la première nuit, ça n’aurait pas été bon pour la course. C’est une très bonne décision. »

A Auckland, le village de la course va commencer à être démonté pour raison de sécurité mais c’est le seul changement notable. La course In-Port est maintenue demain, samedi, avec une vingtaine de nœuds et un grand soleil. En fonction des conditions, une course caritative pourra être organisée dimanche après midi.
