Volvo Ocean Race - Un cyclone tropical, baptisé Pam, évolue en ce moment au large de la Nouvelle-Zélande avec des vents enregistrés à 200 km/h.

« Notre principal sujet d’inquiétude est l’état de la mer plus que le vent. Les bateaux peuvent supporter des vents très forts mais il y aura des vagues énormes le long de la côte néo-zélandaise et il n’y a rien pour s’abriter » précise Knut Frostad, le CEO de la Volvo Ocean Race. En effet, quelque soit la trajectoire du cyclone et même s’il passe au large de la Nouvelle-Zélande, il générera une mer démontée susceptible de causer de graves problèmes à la flotte dès l’entame de la course.



Pascal Bidégorry, le navigateur de Dongfeng Race Team, confiait à l’Equipe n’avoir « jamais vu ça de [sa] vie ». Les fichiers météo sont impressionnants, virant du vert (pour le vent faible) au rouge sans beaucoup de transition avant de passer au violet foncé (vent très fort). « Le [lundi] matin, il n'y a plus que douze mètres de vagues mais encore 40 nœuds de vent de nord-ouest et de sud-ouest, alors imaginez les vagues au milieu de tout ça. Comment partir alors que ça va être dantesque » s’interroge « Bidé ».

A l’heure actuelle, le départ est reporté au moins de 24h00 mais « cela peut-être plus tard » explique Knut Frostad qui surveille l’évolution du cyclone avec beaucoup d’attention. Le programme des activités de ce week-end est maintenu, et notamment l’In-Port Race de samedi après-midi, prévu dans des conditions parfaites avec 20 nœuds de vent et un grand soleil.

« La sécurité avant tout. Nous prenons cette décision maintenant car nous ne connaissons pas exactement le trajet de ce cyclone à l’heure actuelle.

Les bateaux ne quitteront pas Auckland avant lundi 14h locales (2 h HF) mais cela peut-être plus tard. Cela dépend complètement de la trajectoire de PAM. »
