Yesterday Volvo Ocean Race threw open the barriers and let the media have an inside view of the Boatyard at the Viaduct Events Centre
The area is open to the public (stay behind the safety barriers) where you can see the boats on the hard, and look inside the Events Centre which has been converted into a massive sail and rigging loft.
All gear used during the race is service by the Volvo Ocean Race team to reduce team support costs, plus the teams have access to a common/shared supply of materials to make their own additions (not covered by the one design rules) to the boats.
The boats are re-launched on Thursday March 5 after being fully checked and serviced.
A complete false floor is set up on the Events Centre floor. After the event it is packed onto the flatbeds of the race boat cradles and shipped to the next venue. Two complete sets of servicing gear leapfrog each other around the world, so there is no possibility of the boats arriving before the service centre and facilities.
