The weather on the final day of the Sydney Yacht Championships continued it’s erratic ways, keeping everyone guessing as to what was coming next and bringing the result in the Sydney 38s and 36s to a nail-biter in the final race.
The weather gods continued their fickle ways with rain dying away and taking the breeze with it during Race 5 before clearing clouds eventually allowed a second race just when it seemed the regatta might be over.
Such was the relief at gaining enough breeze to get the boats moving in Race 6 at more than the now customary glacial paced roller-ride over long offshore swell, that the PRO opted for a third race well into the afternoon, when nervous Victorian crew were wondering about whether they’d catch their flights home.
To that point Brenton and Jen Carnell well and truly had one hand on the Sydney 38 trophy, but it almost slipped from their grasp in the final race, their boat emerging victorious by only a single point, from Mark Griffith’s Old School.
It was a result matched in the Sydney 36s with Peter Franki’s Salt Shaker winning from Steve Hatch’s M, by the same margin.
