Surf to City 2015 - So what now the dust has settled?

The Fat Controller and Immigrant - looking for wind and waves Peter Hackett
Surf to City 2015 - Well the dust has settled on the biggest edition of this race for many years. We are still not sure why, but in spite of really crappy rain and wind conditions for the delivery sail to the gold coast, the real sailors ignored Friday’s foot of rain falling out of the heavens and got sorted for a pleasant southerly with a few bullets on the ocean course to stretch the kites in the race on Saturday.

Some things change and some don’t and it was reassuring to find that like in other years.

- If you were lazy on the outside course and went to sea you came last. The clever guys like Jim Fern on Hasta La Vista cut in through the lifesavers again and showed that many gybes maketh for good results.

- If you then sailed into the bay from the ocean and enjoyed the evening doldrums without watching where you went, some of the marks of the course did better than you. (sailing backwards) Many boats from all divisions pulled out at this point.

- On the inside drain run the moored boats still resemble 'Hangover 3 the Movie', with some houseboats exceeding the height :width: beam ratios in ways that only a state treasurer could understand. And yes, the old houseboat brothel is still looking seminal at Jacob’s Well, and no, they do not take Eftpos.

- There is always a sunken yacht at Russell Island but this year the floating furniture coming out of the cabin was actually a hazard of the course.

All the representatives from the wide range of clubs on the water managed podium finishes. In the inshore Div 2 Monohulls, Marisa from RQYS took the handicap honours from Lerossignol and Stay Tuned. In Div 3 Mooloolaba boat Time Offf got the gold from the venerable Ocean Racer Chaser and Dopamine. The SMS guys should have a trophy for best named boat, with Southport’s Stay Tuned beating the Raw Prawn and Depth Charge Ethel. Special mention must go to the newly completed sports boat Charlene and the crew that capsized the boat near Jumpinpin to remove half a palm tree from the keel. Applause!!

Multihulls inside OMR rated results went to newly refurbished Frequent Flyer from Skedaddle and AYS Raider. Popular win on PCF went to the Trailertri Aquilo One from Purple Haze and New Horizons.

N the outside course, predictably the scaled down BlackJack Too won IRC from The Fat Controller and Corroboree, ORCi went to Corroboree ahead of Hasta La Vista and Drake’s Prayer, and PHRF was a mix of the same boats. Div 2 went to Southport’s La Balla from Comes a Time and Sassy.

OMR Multihulls in the ocean was all Chillpill then Mojo and Indian Chief who deserves special mention for doing most of the race with the windward rudder inside the boat with more than a headache.

PHRF went to Boss Racing then Chillpill and Mojo.

Thanks to new event sponsors Angove Wines, and Cumberland
