The Volvo 70 Giacomo lost her rig in the vicinity of Maria Island about 5.30pm local time yesterday evening.
Hobart Race Control reported that all on board were safe and well. She appears to be under motor and moving at a speed of 4-5kts.
Her position is about halfway down the Tasmanian coast, and about 100nm from the finish at Hobart.
Giacomo is a Volvo 70 owned and skippered by Jim Delegat (NZL) and has a largely New Zealand crew aboard including one of the owner's sons.
She is the former Volvo Ocean Race winner, Groupama, skippered by Franck Cammas, and has been raced extensively out of New Zealand. Giacomo competed in the 2013 Rolex Sydney Hobart finishing sixth over the line.
Several former America's Cup and Volvo Ocean Race sailors are on board.
The reports were denied by a spokesperson for Rolex Sydney Hobart Media when contacted by Sail-World, however the Media Centre has twittered confirming the dismasting.
A second yacht, Wedgetail, an RP55, lost the top of her mast in the same area at the same time, and has also retired. It was her second withdrawal in successive Rolex Sydney Hobart races.
